                                                    Who are you :

My name is Blessing Mutamba and I am 22 years old. I was born in Mutare where I spent my early childhood before moving to Ireland which is where I grew up. In my house, our Zimbabwean heritage has always been a big parts of our identities and I’m grateful that moving overseas didn’t stop me from embracing it. After we lived in Ireland, my family and I then moved to Guernsey in the Channel Islands where I finished my high school and did my A Levels. At this point, I was 17 years old and had become increasingly conscious of the fact that I was growing up in isolation from the experiences other young women my age were going through in Zimbabwe. Because of this, I started a charitable organisation just before I turned 18 which concentrated on raising money for a charity called Save the Children who had been working with girls in rural areas of Zimbabwe at the time. I think what I cherished the most was that Save the Children not only focused on educating the girls they worked with inside the classroom but also on real life subjects like protecting themselves against domestic violence, making sanitary products out of every day items and giving children vital nourishment in their early lives. From my first project as the Managing Director of Giving through Labels, I raised just over £2,000 but unfortunately I did not manage to complete more projects as I had academic commitments.

I went on to university to study my Bachelor’s degree in Creative Enterprise which I attained a First Class Honours classification and therefore led to me being selected on a highly competitive business incubation programme underpinned by a master’s degree in Entrepreneurship which I have just finished. After I finished my undergraduate studies, I was in the process of starting my luxury travel and gifts company but I slowed down on progressing with to enable me to concentrate on my Master’s degree. I have just relaunched my website today and will begin to offer gift concierge, lifestyle management and bespoke travel planning services later in the month. In the past I’ve dealt with high net worth clients from Zimbabwe, Dubai and UK so would like to expand my client bases within these three locations between now and the end of the year as part of my relaunch strategy.

I have been competing in pageants since 2011 with competitions such as Miss African Spirit and Miss Zimbabwe UK being amongst some of the first I took part in. The last pageant I competed in was Miss Collegiate Ireland where I placed second. I came across Miss Africa GB and fell in love with it because the pageant lends itself to giving young women of African descent a platform on which to showcase their culture, talent and creativity. Furthermore, the winner becomes a goodwill ambassador for the pageant and gets the chance to design and implement a charity programme which is assisted by the pageant platform. As well as the element of charitable giving, Miss Africa GB aims to promote African culture, tourism and lifestyle to the global community. As someone who travels a lot both back home to Zimbabwe and other countries abroad, I really appreciate how opening yourself up to different cultures and lifestyles can contribute to growing into a more open minded person.

''I think that investing in oneself starts with not only educating others about your way of life but being humble enough to listen and change your opinions if someone tells you a compelling story.''

In the wake of a new era for Zimbabwe, I want to be that person who shines a light on our beautiful country. I want to do this so we can change opinions and encourage more people to take a natural interest in our rich culture which is full of love, laughter and aspiration so I am keen to join forces with as many Zimbabwean based thought leaders to make this happen. With that being said, looking back on my experiences of where I am now has taught me that being a pioneering individual comes with its own tribulations. Where I want to inspire young women to excel in their lives, I want to make sure they are equipped to face their hurdles with strength and tenacity. This is where education comes in because as long as you have your degree or your diploma or your certificate, people can try and challenge you but they can never take what you can prove you know away from you. I think giving young women that power feels like a way that I can make a connection with other young Zimbabwean young women who have different struggles to the ones I go through and keeping that spirit alive is what I want to contribute towards in whatever way I can.
